Deciding whether or not to purchase materials at your local home improvement store and DIY or have a seamless gutter system installed by a professional? In today's economy, we all have to try to save a buck here and there, and they make everything look so easy on the Home and Garden Channel! But there are still projects that are better left to the professional. Installing a gutter system on your home is definately one of them !
First you have to decide "What's my time worth to me?". What may take a few hours for a professional installer could take the average homeowner a weekend to install.
Then you have to decide "Do I have the skills and knowledge to install them correctly?" .Sure anyone can hang a gutter, but can you make it work... properly? Can you make it last for years? If you save a few in the beginning, but have to hire a professional to install a seamless gutter system in a couple of years... where's the savings?
Another thing to consider is the difference between products and materials you would find at a home improvement store vs. what a seamless gutter company would install. The vinyl gutters you see advertised in the weekly circular for pennies a foot are not suitable for any area that has snow, wind, or extreme heat due to the high expansion and contraction rate of the vinyl. They come in 10 foot lengths, have flimsey expansion joints which connects the sections together (which you'll have to re-seal every year) and the mounting brackets are intsalled with standard screws. not intended to carry any amount of substantial weight. Not to mention the fact that they only come in two colors.
The aluminum gutters and componants found at home improvement centers are a little bit better, look a little nicer and are a little more expensive. They still come in 10 foot lengths, still only 2 colors, and still won't hold up to our winters. The aluminum is a thinner gauge (thickness) and my wife said she was able to bend one of their internal hanging brackets in half. And they were expensive!
So now that you've decided to go Seamless, it's time to decide on a which company you'll hire to
